OLLS Catholic School is proud of the many opportunities throughout the year students have to deepen their faith. Our faith is woven into the fabric of daily life at OLLS, inspiring students to live out their beliefs through prayer, service, and acts of compassion.
Weekly Mass
Students in grades Kindergarten through grade 8 attend Mass each week. All grade levels have the opportunity to plan and participate in Masses throughout the year. These opportunities include: being a cantor, singing in the choir, being a reader, greeting people as they enter church, being a server, being a cross bearer, and presenting the gifts. Parents and other family members are invited to attend the weekly masses.
Daily Prayer
Prayer is an essential aspect of our lives. Our entire school prays at the beginning and end of each school day. Classes also pray together throughout the day, before meals, and prior to starting class.
Devotions
Our faith is lived out throughout as students have the opportunity to participate in many devotions. Some of these devotions are May Crowning, the Christmas program, Advent activities, Lenten activities, Divine Mercy, the Rosary, and the Stations of the Cross.
Service to Others
Be active members! Go on the offensive! Play down the field, build a better world, a world of brothers and sisters, a world of justice, of love, of peace, of fraternity, of solidarity.
-Pope Francis
The education of our students is certainly important, but our Catholic faith teaches us that we must not only learn, we must use what we learn to go out and help others. As such, service is an important part of our lives, our parish, and our school.
Families are asked to participate in service throughout the year to the school and the parish to which they belong. There are a variety of service opportunities in the school, from serving on HASA to being a mystery reader in a child’s classroom. Service to our parish, such as serving as a lector at Mass or an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, creates unity among our Catholic community.
However, we also desire to instill in our children the value of service. As such, community service projects, both locally and globally, are offered to our students throughout the year as part of their school day and on their own.
Together, we can build a stronger and more united world, by taking what we learn and putting it into action in service to others.
Retreats
Retreats are an incredible opportunity for us to step away from our regular routines and give God the time to enter more profoundly into our lives. We are excited to be able to offer retreats for all our Middle School students. Our retreats have been designed around various virtues which guide our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ.
Through Sacred Scripture, the lives of the Saints, and prayer, we hope these retreats will nourish the faith of our students and help them become the saints that God is calling them to be. These days will be filled with prayer, reflections led by Austin Faur, small groups, concrete ways to put their faith into action, and activities for strengthening our community.
Catholic Schools Week
What is National Catholic Schools Week? National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs the whole week. Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation.
Catholic Schools Week began in 1974 and always begins on the last Sunday in January.
Mentoring
It’s important that our children have positive role models in their lives. A role model being someone whose behavior, example or success can be emulated by others. The first and foremost role model in a child’s life is his or her parents. A child’s peers also serve a role. At OLLS, each school year all kindergarten and 1st grade students are paired with 8th and 7th grade student buddies, respectively. These older students serve as mentors to the younger children, helping them grow spiritually, academically, and socially, modeling to these younger students, the “Lourdes Way.” The younger students also provide an opportunity for our older students to learn to serve and help others.
